This week I found a new store in burnaby BC that carries a variety of “health” products and alternative food options for good prices and great shipping. Its called The Low Carb Grocery and they’re great for low calorie recipes.

For a lot of my clients, and myself, we take our bodies to the extreme and get down to single digit body fat levels. So having low calorie recipes to choose from can really help our goals. Products that REDUCE their carbohydrate content and fat content can and will help achieve our goals without having to sacrifice too much variety and taste. So as long as one sticks to their daily Protein, CarbFat, and Fiber intake requirements each day and gets the needed micronutrients they can get the results they’re looking for.

One of the most easily over eaten foods there is, and most tastiest I must say, is peanut butter. Especially speaking to my women clients, nut butter tastes amazing and really satisfies cravings. Unfortunately the majority of calories coming from nuts is fat. Nuts contain a whack load of nutrients and the fat they contain is healthy BUT  fat contains more than TWICE as many calories per gram than carbs and protein alone (about 9 calories/gram vs. 4 calories/gram).

If you’ve ever put down a whole jar of nut butter while dieting you can relate to what I mean. It is very difficult to stay within your daily fat intake after doing this…

Luckily, while at the CHFA West expo, I discovered a relatively new product called PB2. This is a peanut flour that as been “De-Fatted” to reduce 85% of it’s fat content and thus reduce it overall calorie content.

This can be a god send if you love peanut butter but still wan’t to achieve ripped defined abs for the summer while getting in more kinds of fats in your diet.

What about price?

Well luckily I did a little research and found this new website and grocery store where the prices were decent and best of all it was local. At The Low Carb Grocery, as of writing this post, they sell 1 pound of PB2 for $13.49. Overall not a bad price as you could pay that much for some ridiculous organic variety peanut butter for close to that.

But being the cheap thrifty guy that I am I decided to see if I could find an even better alternative to PB2. And I did.

Peanut Flour

As it turns out a brand called Protein Plus offers a Peanut Flour that is ONLY 12% fat and guess what? Its even CHEAPER than PB2. At The Low Carb Grocery, at the time I am writing this blog post, they sell the Peanut flour for only $7.99 per pound. That’s $5.50 cheaper!

But does it taste good?

Well here’s the catch, but its a small catch. The PB2 is more than just defatted peanut flour, it also contains a little added sugar and salt.

On the PB2 nutrition label, a 12g serving contains 1 gram of sugar and 94 mg of sodium.

The Custom Peanut Flour Recipe

Recipe:

– 11g Peanut Flour
– 1g Sugar (you can use stevia, honey, or whatever you prefer)
– 1/16 Tsp Sea Salt
– Small amount of water until creamy

 

 

The verdict?

I found that it tasted just like creamy smooth peanut butter you would get from KRAFT but without the horrible transfat. SCORE!

BONUS: If you want to make it Chocolate Peanut Butter simply add Cocoa powder and voila!

The Comparison

Normal Traditional Peanut butter contains 50g of fat per 100g while this Peanut flour recipe contains ONLY 13.3g of Fat per 100g
